Centralis partnered with the Success in Education Foundation to inspire students to pursue their dreams.
The Challenge
The Success in Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to motivating and preparing Utah students for post-secondary education. Their app, Keys to Success, encourages students to work toward their educational and career goals by connecting them with college resources, scholarships, internships, and other training opportunities.
Success in Education partnered with Centralis to evaluate the overall usability of their app and gather users' subjective responses to its offerings, such as redeemable prizes, scholarships, and internships.
The Process
Centralis conducted remote usability sessions with high-school juniors and seniors in Utah. As the sessions were mainly with minors, we worked with parents to obtain consent and verify that their child qualified for the study. Both the parents and students received incentives to minimize no-shows and ensure robust participation.
To evaluate the new user experience, we recruited students who had not previously used the app. Students shared their screen via Zoom as they interacted with the app, talking aloud about what they were seeing and doing. Success in Education stakeholders observed the sessions live and participated actively in a debrief with the Centralis team after testing was complete.
The Impact
High schoolers felt that the app’s concept was valuable and had some insightful suggestions for improving its usability. Specifically, they wanted more control and flexibility when exploring content related to career guidance, college search, scholarships, internships, and prizes.
The Success in Education Foundation was thrilled to hear directly from their target audience and excited to have our practical design recommendations to improve the app.
