Centralis & RTA help transit riders find their way around Chicagoland

Chicago’s Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is the financial oversight and planning body for three public transit operators in northeastern Illinois: the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Pace. Together, these agencies offer more than 300 bus and rail lines that serve more than four million riders every week.

The Challenge

The RTA is leading a cooperative initiative to provide passengers with a seamless public transportation system, regardless of what mode(s) of transit they use. As part of this effort, the RTA and its design partners created a series of maps, signs and schedules that bring together travel information from different transit agencies into a consolidated view. The RTA asked Centralis to ensure that these integrated materials are effective for helping passengers make decisions about the best way to find their destinations.

Our Work

To evaluate the clarity and usability of RTA’s signage, we devised a two-part research initiative. The first study took place at Centralis Lab, where participants were asked to plan future trips using a series of new maps and schedules. This provided detailed usability information about the individual items.

Our second study examined the signs in context. We conducted a field study at a large public transportation hub, observing as participants used the maps and signs to determine where they should go to complete their travels. Sign placement, lighting and accessibility issues were also evaluated.

Following both studies, Centralis facilitated a workshop with the design team, identifying key opportunities to modify and augment the signage to provide a better experience for transit riders.

The Outcome

Acting on our recommendations, the RTA has improved its integrated signage and is adding it to additional stations. The RTA continues to work with Centralis to help riders plan and execute successful journeys through the Chicago transit system.
